Toujounine Solar Power Plant is Mauritania’s largest photovoltaic plant of the country. Commissioned in 2017 with a commanding capacity of 50 MW. Spanning 110 hectares of previously barren land, its 156,000 solar panels capture the Sahara’s relentless rays, generating 100 GWh annually—enough to power 80,000 households and supply 12% of Nouakchott’s electricity needs.
Toujounine stands as a cornerstone of Mauritania’s ambitious renewable energy vision, which saw the country surpass its 20% renewable energy target by 2020, reaching 24% green energy in its mix.
Operated by the Société Mauritanienne d’Électricité (Somelec), Toujounine exemplifies sustainable progress. Somelec, Mauritania’s state-owned utility since 2001, drives the nation’s green transition with a mission to universalize electricity access by 2030. From zero renewables in 2008 to 38% of the electricity mix by 2022, their journey—bolstered by Toujounine—sets a regional benchmark. The plant’s impact extends beyond power: it created 300 jobs during construction, employs 20 permanent local technicians, and supports community initiatives, including water pumps and schools. Partnerships with École des Métiers and Nouakchott University inspire the next generation, with over 100 students and interns trained in solar technology since 2018.
