The Plaine des Roches Wind Farm stands as a landmark achievement in Mauritius’ renewable energy journey. Commissioned in early 2016, it is the island’s very first onshore wind farm, pioneering wind power in a country historically reliant on thermal generation from diesel, coal, and bagasse. Developed by Qair, this 9.35 MW project comprises 11 turbines and delivers approximately 15–16 GWh of clean electricity annually—enough to power around 10,000 to 15,000 Mauritian households.

By injecting reliable, renewable energy into the Central Electricity Board (CEB) grid, Eole Plaine des Roches reduces dependence on imported fossil fuels, cuts CO2 emissions, and strengthens energy security on a small island vulnerable to climate change and fuel price volatility. Its proven performance has paved the way for Qair’s continued expansion in Mauritius, including 25.3 MW of solar capacity and the ambitious 60 MWac hybrid solar + battery storage projects awarded in 2023, all supporting the national goal of 60% renewable energy in the electricity mix by 2030.

Qair’s deep expertise in island environments and cyclone-prone regions is clearly demonstrated here: the turbines are equipped with advanced anti-cyclonic protection systems, ensuring resilience and uninterrupted production even during extreme weather. This combination of innovation, local partnership, and long-term sustainability makes Eole Plaine des Roches more than a wind farm — it is a powerful symbol of Mauritius’ transition toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
